Today's Alumni Spotlight is Katia (Locke) Hughes '09. What was your best memory from school? I have too many great memories from school to just pick one. Some of the highlights that I have from school include playing sports (volleyball in particular), attending sporting events, being homecoming Queen, and seeing my friends and laughing with them daily. What was your favorite class/activity? My favorite class was Anatomy with Mrs. Ewing. A highlight from this class was dissecting cats to learn the muscular system which was a great hands-on learning activity. What advice do you have for students? The advice that I have for students is to just keep going. Sometimes your "big goals" seem so far away but just keep taking small steps daily and you will eventually reach that "big goal" and live the life you've been working so hard for. What did you do right out of high school, and what do you do now? After high school, I attended Lake Superior State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training degree. I then attended Grand Valley State University and received my Masters degree in Occupational Therapy. After becoming an Occupational Therapist I worked for MyMichigan Medical Center Sault (formerly War Memorial Hospital) from November 2018-November 2022 primarily providing school-based occupational therapy services. In November 2022, I began working for the Eastern Upper Peninsula Intermediate School District as a Transition Coordinator/Special Education Supervisor.

This week's alumni spotlight is Derek Harter '04. What was your best memory from school? There were a lot of good memories to choose from but one of my favorites was making it to the post season for baseball and basketball with my teammates. The 2003 and 2004 classes broke the ceiling and got Rudyard back on the map for competitive sports. This was all based on the hard work and determination that everyone pushed to achieve during our years at Rudyard High School. What was your favorite class/activity? As part of my decision to become a Civil Engineer I would have to say both math and science were my two favorite subjects while in school. Both subjects prepared myself for university. What advice do you have for students? Learn to work together in group projects with other students. When you work on a project in real life 99% of the time you will have to work together in a team/group setting to achieve your desired outcome. I also recommend to learn how to delegate and take responsibility for the chosen task. What did you do right out of high school, and what do you do now? After graduating Rudyard High in 2004 I was fortunate enough to continue playing football at Michigan Technological University where I studied Civil Engineering for my undergrad (2008) and then a Masters of Engineering (2009). Today I'm currently employed by CSX Transportation working for the railroad as a General Manager Network Operations working in the dispatch center for the 24/7 and 365 day operations. The job is fun and challenging with something to be learned every day.

This week's alumni spotlight is Cody Mayer '07. What was your best memory from school? All the late nights playing Halo at the Malaski house. What was your favorite class/activity? Welding. What advice do you have for students? Try to set a good example for the underclassman. They are watching you even when you think they’re not. What did you do right out of high school, and what do you do now? I worked for Love farms, then started my career in law enforcement working for the Chippewa County Sheriff department. Now I’m a Michigan State Trooper.
